64 The National Music of America.
of Trinity Church, in 1774, advertises that he is about to open a dancing - school in addition to his musical duties.
There were earlier secular concerts than the one mentioned above. The earliest of which we have any record was given in Faneuil Hall, Boston, in 1744, for the benefit of the poor, while, less than a score of years later, Mr. Dipper,1 organist of King's Chapel, was constantly giving musical entertainments and exhibitions. The tickets to these concerts were generally half a dollar each.
The programmes were sometimes of a very heterogeneous description, as witness the following one, given in Salem, May 15, 1798-
